An Introduction to CBN for Sleep

It’s no secret that sleep is crucial for our health and wellness, and a lack of sleep can take real toll on our cognitive functions in waking life. New research shows sleep deprivation can lead to loneliness, mood disorders, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and decreased immune functioning. And in this time of global health crisis, good night’s sleep seems even harder to come by.

You may have had some experience using CBD for sleep, but there is a lesser known cannabinoid that’s emerging in the wellness space and catching the attention of sleep scientists.

An Introduction to CBN

Cannabinol, or ‘CBN’, is minor cannabinoid with the potential for major application. It’s one of over 100 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant and is a bi-product of the degradation and oxidization of THC over time. Like its more widely known counterpart, CBD, CBN is considered non-intoxicating, though some reports show mild effects.

CBN’s effects can be heightened when pairing it with other cannabinoids, such as CBD or THC. These compounds work in concert in what is known as ‘the entourage effect’, binding to your brain’s natural cannabinoid receptors. Both CBD and CBN, taken together or separately, are known to have analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects.

While more research is needed to fully understand the effects of CBN and other cannabinoids, there is some indication that CBN could be helpful with anxiety, appetite regulation, insomnia, and immune support. As we continue to learn more about CBN, it’s possible this humble cannabinoid may become household name soon enough.
